The 1978 Davidson soccer team achieved a
record of five wins, ten losses and one tie. The five
wins were a vast improvement over the winless '17
season. Kevin "Cowboy" Robbins played well
enough to earn a position on the all-Southern
Conference first team. Freshman C.K. Nichols and
Joel Shirk were named to the second team, while
Doug Schuessler and Mike lordanou received
honorable mention. Schuessler, a scoring leader at
the forward position was voted Davidson's most
valuable player.

Swimming
Because of the lack of diving facilities on
campus, the Davidson swim team held most of
their meets at the UNCC pool. Even with the strain
of travel the cats posted a 12-3 record and won
second place in the Southern Conference
Tournament. Mark Tommerdahl won three
conference titles. Swimmers named
"All-Conference" were Tommerdahl, Paul Voight,
Mike Schremmer, Keith Riddle, Warren Beck,
Craig Allen and Craig Finger. The fact that six of the
seven swimmers given conference honors were
freshmen illustrates the effective recruiting by
coach Pat Miller. Her tremendous success this year
resulted in her being chosen the Southern
Conference Coach of the Year.

Wrestling
The absence of coach Charlie Parker due to
illness was capably filled this winter by math
professor Richie King. The D.C. wrestlers struggled
to a 2-5 record, however several individuals placed
well in competition. Captain Pat Dulany won all of
his last twenty matches at 142 pounds. In a
tournament at Washington and Lee, Scott Phillips
won his weight class and was named outstanding
wrestler. Graduation will take away Dulany,
Phillips, Pete Johnson, and others of the already
small team. However, freshman Scott Smith
wrestled well at 134 pounds and shows promise
for the future.

Cross Country
Led by Bart Landess and Doug
Horn, the Davidson harriers compiled
a 5-8 record. Highlight of the year was
a sixth place finish in the Southern
Conference above teams who had
finished ahead of D.C. in earlier meets.
A record of one win, three losses
and one tie may not be very
impressive, but the brand new
Davidson women's cross country team
worked hard for it. After much hard
work and with the help of coach Norm
Koller, the lady harriers are off and
running.

Women's Basketball
After a long and frustrating season a ray of hope
appeared on that day in February when the David-
son woman's basketball team trounced
Greensboro College 67-44 in their last home per-
formance of the season. They played with confi-
dence, took charge and never let up. True, the
records show only 4 wins to 15 losses, but that
night the past eighteen games didn't mean a thing.
Such determination portends great promise for the
future. Senior Donna Ferren was the team's sec-
ond leading scorer and holder of a school record
for free throw percentage. Donna was the only
player to graduate. Sarah Womack, Davidson's
leading scorer and rebounder, was voted First
Team All-State Division III. Sophomores Kirby
Owen and Jeanne Plowden came up from the
IMAC ranks and performed well. The future looks
brighter for the Lady Cats.

Field Hockey
Yes, Davidson does have a winning team! Field
hockey compiled a record of 9 wins, 3 losses and
2 ties. Top scorers Kirk Cameron, Cathy Inabnet
,ind Lisa Ballantyne led the lady cats to wins over
powerful teams such as Duke and Pfieffer. Eleven
returning players created an experienced and en-
thusiastic team effort. Several girls were selected to
the Deep South Regional teams. Cameron was
selected for the third time in her career. Barb
Ashley, Cindy Curtis, and Cathy Inabnet were also
( hosen for the regional team.

Football
Davidson closed its 1978 season with a 17-12
victory over Lafayette, a 5-5 record, and its first
non-losing season since 1969. Al Rhyne stepped
into the starting quarterback position due to the
loss of senior Bob McCarthy in the opening game
of the season. Freshman Brian Whitmire showed
promise for the future in the quarterback position.
On the receiving end, Gifford Piercy caught 37
passes for 820 yards and 8 touchdowns. School
career rushing leader. Page Walley, along with
Alvin Atkinson and Craig Pyles led the Cats
offensively on the ground. When the Cats couldn't
get the ball moving, Wayne Paymer was on hand
to do the punting. His 40 yard average ranked him
fourth in the nation. The defense, an experienced
and tight-knit squad was led by Gary Stokes, Frank
Fields, Mike Sheridan and secondary standouts
Chris Boslet and Kevin Hanna. The '78 seniors
have succeeded in changing the Davidson football
attitude from thoughts of certain defeat to a
winning frame of mind.

Captain John Gerdy was once again the
pacesetter for the Wildcats this year. Initiating the
season with a 49-point performance against
Canisius, Gerdy went on to surpass Fred Hetzel as
the school's all-time leading scorer and finished his
career as the fifth leading scorer in the nation. Todd
Haynes averaged fifteen points a game highlighted
by a 29-point performance against South Carolina.
Jamie Hall, the Cat's top rebounder was named
Outstanding Freshman in the conference. Pat
Hickert, Tim Bowker, and Brian Rowan all made
substantial contributions throughout the season.
Directing the offense in the backcourt were Ernie
Reigel, Rich Perkey and Greg Berlacher. Ernie
excelled as the team leader and Rich's hustling
style of play was a source of inspiration for players
and fans alike. A victory over N.C.A.A. contender
Connecticut brought the last Charlotte Invitational
Tournament championship home to D.C., and was
part of an early four-game winning streak. A.C.C.
opponent Wake Forest fell to the Cats and served
as a strong impetus for a 17-point win over The
Citadel. First year coach Eddie Biedenbach was
faced with the all too familiar task of changing
Davidson's losing ways. Despite an overall record
of 8 wins and 19 losses, the fundamental, team
oriented style of play served as a ray of hope for the
future of the Wildcats.

Baseball
The 1979 Wildcat Baseball team started the
season with high hopes for their best season ever,
due to the strong leadership of senior captains Ron
Cannon, Jim Richards and Tim Goodell, and the
increased experience and talent of last year's
freshman starters Cam Zurbruegg, Joby Merten and
John Porter. However, inconsistent pitching and a
lack of confidence plagued the team early in the
season, as demonstrated by the record. Despite
these problems, the majority of games drew
numerous scouts interested primarily in catcher
Bob Lapple, whose awesome defensive ability and
powerful hitting will undoubtedly land him a
career in professional baseball.

Track
As a minor sport, Track attracts few students to
Davidson, thus coach Karl Kremser finds many of
the team members within the ranks of other
Davidson sports. For example. Lance Sisco, a
football player excelled in the high hurdles. Sisco
broke a school record in 1 10 meter high hurdles.
Another football player, Willie Lanier showed skill
in the shot put and discus events. Cross country
team member Bart Landess naturally helped the
Cats in distance runs. This year Davidson
competed in Women's Track also. Coach Dee Dee
Mayes' fledgling team took fourth place in the
Davidson Relays. Elizabeth Dean and Sarah Todd
came in first and second in the 3000 meter race.

twelve wins to only five losses. Freshman
Emmy Knobloch took over the number one
